Common Methodologies:

Stool Antigen Test: Detects active infections by finding bacterial antigens in fecal samples.
Rapid Urease Test: Uses a biopsy sample (during endoscopy) to detect the enzyme urease, a marker for the bacteria.
Blood Antibody Test: Detects IgG antibodies in serum, indicating current or past infection.
Benefits: High sensitivity (around 95%+) and specificity (96%+), providing immediate, private results.
Important Usage Notes: It is advised to stop taking proton pump inhibitors, bismuth preparations, or antibiotics for 2 weeks prior to avoid false negatives.

LIMITATIONS OF TEST

1.The H.Pylori Rapid Test is for professional in vitro diagnostic use, and should only be used for the qualitative detection of H. pylori antibodies. No meaning should be inferred from the color intensity or width of any apparent bands.
2.This test should be used for symptomatic individuals with gastrointestinal disorders. Diagnosis of gastritis and/or peptic ulcers should be based on test results in conjunction with other clinical and laboratory findings.
3.A positive result suggests only the presence of antibodies specific to H. pylori, and does not distinguish between active and past infections. A positive result is not necessarily indicative of gastrointestinal disease.
If the test result is negative and clinical symptoms persist, additional testing using other clinical methods is recommended. A negative result does not at any time rule out the possibility of H. pylori infection, as antibodies to H. pylori may be present below the minimum detection level of the test.
Specimens from patients infected with C. jejuni may exhibit a low level of cross-reactivity in this test.

FAQ

Q: What if the H. pylori test is positive?

A: A positive test result means that you have an H. pylori infection. Your provider will usually prescribe one or more antibiotics to treat the infection. You will usually take other medicines to relieve your symptoms and help heal your stomach.

Q: What to avoid before an H. pylori stool test?

A: Specimen Instructions: Patient preparation: To avoid false negative results, no antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors, or a bismuth preparation should be administered to patient for 14 days prior to specimen collection. Specimen is stable for ONLY 2 hours at room temperature, 72 hours refrigerated and 1 month frozen.

Q: What are three symptoms of an H. pylori infection?

A:Symptoms
An ache or burning pain in the stomach area, also called the abdomen.
Stomach pain that may feel worse when the stomach is empty.
Upset stomach.
Loss of appetite.
Frequent burping.
Bloating.
Weight loss.

Q: What is the red flag of H. pylori?

A: Dark or Tarry Stools (Melena)
This is a serious symptom that requires immediate medical attention. Dark, black, or tar-like stools can indicate bleeding in your stomach, a potential complication of an untreated H. pylori-induced ulcer. If you notice this, do not wait-seek medical help right away.

Q: Which drink kills H. pylori?

A:Green tea:
Green tea has many antioxidants and nutrients which can inhibit the growth of H. Pylori. Animal research found that green tea's main antioxidants called catechins may reduce peptic ulcers caused by H. Pylori. Human studies found that catechins are a type of polyphenol that may help to eradicate bacterium.
