At Home Cotinine Urine Test
Details
An at-home cotinine urine test is a fast, non-invasive, and highly accurate (often >99%) screening tool used to detect nicotine use by measuring cotinine, a byproduct formed when the body breaks down nicotine. It identifies tobacco, vaping, and nicotine replacement products within 3–4 days of last use.

Description

Key Aspects of An at-home cotinine urine test:

Method: A simple dip-strip or cassette method where a urine sample is collected and tested, providing results in about 5 minutes.

What it Detects: It measures cotinine, not nicotine itself. Cotinine is a superior marker because it remains in the body for several days, whereas nicotine leaves in hours.

Detection Window: It generally detects cotinine for up to 3–4 days, though some tests can pick it up for up to 7 days, allowing detection of smoking, vaping, chewing tobacco, patches, and gum.

Uses: Ideal for checking on smoking cessation progress, for workplace screening, or for parents monitoring teens.

Cut-off Levels: Kits usually have a threshold (often 100 ng/mL or 200 ng/mL) to determine a positive or negative result.

Accuracy: These kits are reliable, often offering over 99% accuracy compared to lab methods (GC/MS), according to product descriptions on Amazon.com.

Limitations: While highly accurate, they are not a substitute for clinical laboratory testing.

QUALITY CONTROL

Internal procedural controls are not included in the test. A colored band appearing in the control region (C) is considered an internal positive procedural control, confirming sufficient specimen volume and correct procedural technique.
External controls are not supplied with this kit. It is recommended that positive and negative controls be tested as a good laboratory practice to confirm the test procedure and to verify proper test performance.

REAGENTS

Each test consists of a reagent strip . The amount of each antigen and/or antibody coated on the strip is less than 0.001 mg for antigen conjugates and goat anti-mouse IgG antibodies, and less than 0.0015 mg for antibody components. The control zone of each test contains goat anti-mouse IgG antibody. The test zone of each test contains drug-bovine protein antigen conjugate, and the conjugate pad of each test contains monoclonal anti-drug antibody and mouse antibody-colored particle complex.

FAQ

Q: Can you test for cotinine at home?

A: Reliable Quality - Carethetic Nicotine urine drug test kit can detect tobacco, vaping, cigarettes, e-cigarettes, nicotine patches, nicotine gum use by detecting cotinine in human urine. Each test is sealed in an individual pouch for easy carry and sanitary. It is easy to use and administer.

Q: What can make you test positive for cotinine?

A: Cotinine is the major metabolite of nicotine, formed shortly after nicotine enters the body. A person can be exposed to nicotine through use of or exposure to tobacco products (cigarettes, chewing tobacco, e-cigarettes, nicotine patches, etc.).

Q: How long until cotinine clears urine?

A: Neither nicotine nor cotinine will be detectable in your urine after 3 to 4 days of stopping tobacco products. If you smoke menthol cigarettes or breathe in secondhand menthol smoke, cotinine may stay in your urine longer.

Q: Does drinking water get rid of cotinine?

A: Water consumption does not directly get rid of cotinine. Cotinine is primarily eliminated from the body through urine as it is filtered by the kidneys. Drinking water can potentially dilute the concentration of cotinine in the urine, making it less detectable in certain tests.

Q:Can you test positive for cotinine from second hand smoke?

A: Among the participants who reported exposure to second-hand smoke, 4.8% (12 of 249) had cotinine levels of ≥ 40 ng/mL (positive urinary cotinine level), whereas 98.8% (161 of 163) of those who reported no exposure had cotinine levels of < 40 ng/mL (negative urinary cotinine level)

Q:What happens after 2 days of no nicotine?

A: After 2 days: Your lungs will start to clear out mucus and other debris from smoking, so you may experience more coughing than you're used to. Your body will be close to nicotine free, which means you'll be experiencing peak withdrawal symptoms.
